aHUS Canada’s Statement to Ontario Finance Minister

On Tuesday, February 3, 2015, as part of Ontario’s Pre-Budget Consultation, Michael Eygenraam, Vice-Chair of aHUS Canada delivered a brief but powerful statement on behalf of aHUS Canada to Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa. Michael described the devastating impacts aHUS has on patients’ lives, and urged government to make funds available to provide Soliris – the only Health Canada approved and life-saving drug that currently exists for this devastating disease – to the estimated 30 Ontarians with aHUS.

Minister Sousa stated that though developing a budget is a large undertaking, “we can’t leave people behind” and “we must be compassionate.” aHUS Canada agrees with these sentiments, and we look forward to working with the Minister’s Senior Policy Advisor on this important issue.

We urge the province of Ontario to stop putting a price tag on people’s lives. Providing Soliris to our small, finite community of aHUS patients would be affordable, and promises to save organs and limbs, and return us to living healthy lives.
